An open workshop led by Vienna-based artist and oud player Marwan Abado Brought together singers and percussionists from across traditions, backgrounds, and generations – from western classical to rap, from around the city and the world – in a collaborative session inspired by the music of JS Bach, local artists, and the new opera “Orfeo & Majnun,” exploring cultural crossroads and social inclusion throughout Europe. In partnership with Brunnenpassage and UNHCR Austria . Free and open to the public, space is limited.
An open workshop under the direction of Vienna-based artist and oud-player Marwan Abado brings singers and percussionists of different traditions, backgrounds and generations closer together – from western classical music to rap, from Vienna and the rest of the world. The basis and inspiration for making music together is the music of JS Bach and excerpts from “Orfeo & Majnun” – a multilingual opera project that explores cultural interfaces and social inclusion across Europe. The iconic Vienna Secession , founded more than a century ago by the city’s border-crossing artists, hosted a discussion in partnership with Brunnenpassage, a new home for artistic practice, and Act.Now , a network for civic discourse. Yo-Yo Ma joined cultural leaders and local thinkers to discuss why large sections of the city are underrepresented in the cultural sector, and how the city’s art temples can evolve to serve contemporary society. Audience members were invited to sit in a chair next to the invited speakers to join the conversation. Free and open to the public.
In collaboration with the Brunnenpassage – a new place for artistic practice – and Act.Now – a network for the bourgeois discourse – discussions are taking place in the legendary Vienna Secession , which was founded more than a century ago by cross-border artists of the city. Yo-Yo Ma meets with cultural professionals and Viennese intellectuals to discuss why large parts of the city are underrepresented in the cultural sector and how the Viennese art and cultural institutions can adapt to serve society. Participants have the opportunity to sit on the free chair next to the discussants to participate in the conversation. Admission free.
